How is SXSW Interactive different than other tech events?

The variety of programming offered at SXSW Interactive means that the event focuses as much on creativity as it does on technology. This focus is augmented by SXSW Film, which runs concurrently with SXSW Interactive and SXSW Music. Moreover, a full slate of parties and receptions during the evening hours help to accelerate the social aspect of the event.

When can I register to attend the 2010 SXSW Interactive Festival?

Online registration for the 2010 SXSW Interactive Festival will begin on Monday, August 3, 2009. Registering early is the best way to ensure the widest choice of accommodations in Austin during the event.
What does it mean to "register" for SXSW?

When you register to attend SXSW you are purchasing your admittance to the event. Your level of access to particular portions of the event (Interactive, Music, FIlm) is contingent on the type of registration you purchase: Interactive, Film, Music, Gold (Interactive and Film) or Platinum (all three events). Once you are registered to attend you will receive the appropriate Badge when you arrive at the Austin Convention Center. While you can also register on site, it is to your advantage to complete this process through our website BEFORE the event.
Can I buy a one-day pass to SXSW Interactive Festival?

Unfortunately, we do not sell single session or single day passes to the event. As compared to other technology events, the low registration price of the SXSW Interactive Festival makes for an extraordinary value. Even if you are only able to attend for one or two days, the amount of information and networking opportunities afforded by the event make the registration price a bargain.
As a SXSW Interactive registrant, am I able to attend SXSW Film and SXSW Music events?

The SXSW Interactive Festival badge covers admission to all events affiliated with SXSW Interactive. If you want to attend both SXSW Interactive and SXSW Film, then you should purchase a Gold badge. If you want to attend SXSW Interactive, SXSW Film and SXSW Music, then you should purchase a Platinum Badge. If you have already purchased a SXSW Interactive Badge and you wish to upgrade to Gold or Platinum, contact the registration department for pricing details.
Is there a student rate for SXSW Interactive?

What was new for 2009 at the SXSW Interactive Festival?

In 2006, SXSW made a major push into the world of video games with the addition of ScreenBurn. In 2009, the Game Design Competition was added to the ScreenBurn at SXSW lineup. Also new in 2009 was Microsoft BizSpark Accelerator at SXSW. This event allows bleeding-edge companies to present their latest products and services to industry experts, early-adopters, bloggers, mainstream media reporters, and leaders of the venture capital community. As always, the 2009 event continued to provide more structured networking opportunities -- thereby making it easier for you to run into the types of people that you want to meet. Finally, as encouraged by the SXSW community, the 2009 event featured more technical sessions, as well as more panels discussing advanced-level topics.

History of SXSW Interactive
How long has this event been going on?

The SXSW Music Conference and Festival debuted in Austin in March 1987. The event now known as the SXSW Interactive Festival began in 1994 (but, at that point, it was called the SXSW Film and Multimedia Conference). Beginning in 1995, SXSW Film and Multimedia became their own unique and separate events. Four years later, the name Multimedia had morphed into Interactive. ScreenBurn at SXSW, which is focused on video game technology, was added to the mix in 2006 and Microsoft BizSpark Accelerator at SXSW came on board in 2009.
