2010 Showcase Spotlight: Mi Casa Cantina 3/17
More often than not, SXSW happens during St. Patrick’s Day and in 2010 Remezcla.com and BMI teamed to present “Verde Wednesday,” or Green Wednesday, and showcased new and emerging sounds stemming from Latin America and the US, putting a new twist on the the holiday. Local Austinite’s Maneja Beto, LA based La Santa Cecilia, the Bronx's Maluca, Colombia’s DJ Collective Palenke Soultribe, Monterrey’s electro indie pop Volovan and Mexico City’s buzzy indie act Vicente Gayo filled Mi Casa Cantina, proving you don't have to be Irish to enjoy St. Patrick's Day.

Wednesday, March 17th 2010, SXSW teamed up with O.G.P.R. and AllHipHop.com to present the Best in Texas Showcase at La Zona Rosa. Sets from Paul Wall & Chamillionaire, Trae tha Truth, Chalie Boy, Fat Pimp, Dorrough, League of Extraordinary G’z, Question?, Kyle Lee and Big Sid proved that hip-hop is alive and well down deep in the south. Beyond the killer showcase, plenty of SXSW performing artists were in attendance, such as Kid Sister, Yelawolf and Killer Mike.

SonaBLAST! has moved its headquarters from NYC to Louisville, Kentucky. The aim? To become the best indie label in the region. Started in 2002 mainly for singer-songwriters like Mark Geary (SXSW 2004) and Ben Sollee (SXSW 2009), sonaBLAST! now has several exciting bands like Lucky Pineapple and The Seedy Seeds (both SXSW 2009), and The Pass (see video above).

The music community was excited back in June when we learned that SXSW '04 Alum Sufjan Stevens was in fact working on a new album. The excitement came to a rolling boil when we learned that he'd booked a North American tour, set to perform live in large and beautiful, historic theaters and venues across the continent. Then, less than a couple weeks ago, we just about exploded when he surprised us by digitally releasing 60 minute EP All Delighted People with the promise of a physical release to follow shortly.

With an amazing amount of rock memorabilia and awesome exhibits, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has undoubtedly been successful. However, despite that fact, the question of legitimacy still persists. Attempting to answer that and other questions on the panel "Does Rock and Roll Belong in a Museum?" were moderator Jim Henke, Chief Curator of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, guitarist Lenny Kaye of the Patti Smith Group, LA Times Pop Critic Ann Powers, artist Miles Seaton of Akron/Family, and VP of Education and Public Programs at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum Lauren Onkey.
